Microsoft Ignite 2024: Day Two Recap and What’s Coming on Day Three

Topics: What's New

Day two of Ignite 2024 is a wrap, and once again, Microsoft has delivered a lot to unpack.

It’s clear they’re making a big play in solidifying their leadership in AI, cloud, and hybrid work solutions. Like I said yesterday, the true test will be in the execution and not what we see in a bubble here at Ignite. I remain optimistic about the Copilot discussion and see a lot of benefits in having AI helpers to get through the chaos of the day.

With each new announcement, there is plenty to be excited about, especially how Microsoft embeds AI deeper into its ecosystem. Here are my impressions and some highlights from yesterday, along with a few sessions and moments you won’t want to miss today.

Day Two Impressions: AI Gets Smarter, Azure Gets Bigger

Microsoft leaned into AI and Azure once again, with several key updates that stood out.

Copilot Expands its Reach

The evolution of Microsoft Copilot continues to impress. Day two featured new integrations into Teams, Azure, and security tools. For example, AI-generated meeting summaries and automatic task suggestions in Teams feel like natural productivity boosters. However, the standout for me was seeing how Copilot in Azure can simplify cloud management tasks—something worth keeping an eye on for its potential in hybrid environments.

Azure Multi-Cloud

Azure updates took a front-row seat, particularly with the debut of Azure Open Infrastructure, which promises seamless integration across hybrid and multi-cloud setups. While the concept is exciting, I’m curious to see how it holds up in real-world environments that are often less tidy than Microsoft’s demos.

Developers Get Some Love

The introduction of Project Arcadia for app modernization stood out as a big win for dev teams. With updates to Power Platform, Microsoft is making it easier than ever to build and deploy apps quickly, whether you’re a professional coder or a low-code enthusiast. I’ll have to leave it up to others who spend more of their day thinking about code than I do to see if Arcadia ends up as a win.

A Push for Sustainability

Microsoft made sustainability a major focus on day two, unveiling updates to the Microsoft Cloud for Sustainability that include advanced predictive analytics to help businesses manage their carbon footprints more effectively. The company emphasized the role of AI in enhancing data governance and compliance for sustainability reporting, with tools like Microsoft Purview playing a key role.

Microsoft also spotlighted partnerships, such as those with KPMG, to develop innovative carbon accounting strategies. The company still seems committed to achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 through investments in carbon-free energy, including nuclear and fusion technologies.

Preview of Day Three: What to Watch For

Day three will be just as packed, with deep-dive sessions and technical showcases I’m particularly excited about. Here are a few highlights:

  • Unlocking Azure’s Full Potential: Today’s sessions will explore Azure Kubernetes, Edge computing, and AI-powered security in detail. If these are on your radar, today’s the day to tune in.
  • Modern Work at the Forefront: The focus will shift to Microsoft 365, with sessions exploring how new Copilot enhancements reshape hybrid work and collaboration.
  • REMINDER: Recast at Ignite Deep Dive Demo at 2 PM
Don’t forget to join us at 2 PM as my colleague, Courtney Baty, will provide the next deep dive demo. This is an excellent opportunity to see firsthand how Recast Software’s tools fit into Microsoft environments.

Discover the Book of News

One resource I’ve found incredibly useful during Ignite is the Book of News. If you haven’t explored it yet, consider it your go-to manual for understanding Microsoft’s products, services, and overall ecosystem. For a company as big as Microsoft, and the sheer number of technologies they produce, I don’t know if I would have been able to keep up without using it as a reference. There is just so much going on at Ignite.

The Book of News provides:

  • A comprehensive catalog of Microsoft solutions, covering everything from Azure and Microsoft 365 to Dynamics and Power Platform.
  • Detailed use cases, best practices, and how-tos for deploying and managing Microsoft technologies.
  • Guides to help businesses maximize their investments in Microsoft tools, whether you’re a seasoned pro or just getting started.

It’s a fantastic resource for keeping up with the ever-evolving Microsoft ecosystem, and it’s always getting updated with the latest developments. Check it out here: Book of News.

It’s a resource well worth bookmarking.
